ELEVEN

The day before the trial, a knock sounded loud and clear on the door. Obviously, it was someone who didn’t know there was a doorbell.

Jasmine rushed Jewel up to her room and stood just around the corner at the top of the stairs, her gun drawn.

The tension was seriously high. Jewel had been feeling it for several days now, but now she could almost slice it with a knife.

She couldn’t see who was at the door, but she knew it was alright because Jasmine holstered her gun and motioned her out of the bedroom.

“Vin!” Jewel shouted as she reached the top of the stairs.

“Hey, J!” Vincent returned the greeting. “What’s with the shake-down?”

“Witness protection. You get used to it after awhile.”

“Sure you do.” Vincent eyed Sam and Marshall, the two who had let him in and patted him down. “I didn’t see these guys at the antique place.”

“They were there,” Jewel promised.

Jasmine came slowly down the stairs and Nate peeked around the living room door.

“Her I remember seeing,” Vincent declared, pointing at Jasmine. “She looked a little out of place and she kept looking over my way.”

“That’s because I was looking out for my girl,” Jasmine said as she smiled slightly. “I couldn’t have some stranger come in and sweep her off her feet, only to be found out as an assassin or fame-seeker later.”

“But she knows me,” Vincent laughed. He eyed Jasmine almost suspiciously.

“We didn’t. That’s why we closed in.” Marshall gave a weak smile. “By the way, she’s my partner and she’s about twice your age.”

Sam laughed out loud and Nate snickered as he came out into the hallway. Jasmine didn’t find it so funny.

“I am not twice his age. I’m about his age plus half. And thank you so much for making me look old, Marshall!”

“What did you come by to say?” Jewel asked.

“Oh, just good luck at the trial tomorrow. I’ll be there, but I don’t think these guys will let me get close enough to see you, let alone say anything.”

“Do you want to stay for dinner?” Jewel invited.

“No, J. I have to go. Aunt Maria is sick and I’m the only one who volunteered to take care of her.”

“You mean the aunt who wouldn’t take you in after your parents died? Why are you helping her?”

“I forgave her, J. She apologized. We’re all good now.” He leaned over to give Jewel a hug and hurried past Sam and Marshall.

“Bye!” he called back.

“Bye, Vin!” Jewel offered back. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.
